SATNAV / GPS Forensics
The
use of Satellite Navigation (SATNAV) systems is
becoming an everyday occurrence for most of us. More and more
drivers are buying SATNAV kits for their cars, and some cars even
come with pre-installed ones.
Satellite
navigation has taken many forms nowadays. Professional devices for
the military or business trucks, handheld devices for outdoor
activities, and larger devices for airplanes or ships.
As
time passes, SATNAV devices are becoming smaller and more accurate.
Today they are embedded in mobile phones, laptops or other gadgets.
Every
GPS enabled device is keeping a set of data saved. That data can
include last known position, travel between two or more set
positions, and timestamps.
This
information can be useful to businesses, for recording purposes, for
insurance companies, and also for the solving of crimes.
Today
most smartphones (i.e. Nokia N82 and Nokia E71, Blackberry, iPhone,
Samsung, HTC etc.) offer an accurate SATNAV system in your hand. These smartphones offer you all the
usual SATNAV features, plus the option to walk to your destination
(rather than drive).
An
additional feature of the GPS enabled phones is that many of them
embed the GPS info into the photos taken with the mobile. As a
result the photo metadata can reveal the actual coordinates of the
place where the photo was taken.
Strathclyde Forensics can provide you with comprehensive
SATNAV forensic services, tailored to your individual needs.
