CD/DVD Forensics
CDs
and DVDs are used by most computer users for many different reasons.
Initially CDs were used for backup, creating audio disks and were
replacing floppy disks as installation disks. The DVDs with almost 8
times the capacity took over during the recent years. Apart from
backup and installation disks, they are now used widely for copying
movies or music.
There
are many reasons why CDs and DVDs are sometimes not working, without
a prior sign.
The disk surface (outer layer) may be worn out
The disk may be scratched
The disk may be (where possible) formatted
The disk may be overwritten (where possible)
There was an error during the initial encoding
and burning process.
In
most cases, CDs and DVDs are recoverable, especially when they were
used for storing data.
