Data
Cloning
There are three main reasons why you might need an "exact" image of your original hard disk:
1. A forensically sound image is required for every criminal and/or civil investigation. The reason for the creation of such copies is to maintain the integrity of the original source (suspect) medium.
2. Multiple copies of a hard disk may be required for multiple installations (i.e. in an office or call centre environment). So instead of making 20 installations for 20 PCs, you can make one installation and then create exact copies.
3. An "imaged" disk is the best way for backing up your computer software and data. Instead of having to restore an entire installation, you just change the hard disks and you are back in business.
Strathclyde Forensics uses a wide range of methods for hard disk cloning. Every cloning is verified by an MD5 hash number, a unique identifier that confirms that the two disks are an exact copy in every respect.
