Internet Banking

Internet banking has been around for sometime now, but it is the last decade that saw a real increase in its use.

Technological changes like broadband internet and new encryption algorithms make it one of the safest ways to conduct your business and banking transactions.

There are two major ways something can go wrong with online banking:

The bank's side: If something happens to your account and your money, you are protected by the bank's insurance.

The user's side: If something goes bad from your end, then you might not be covered by your bank. Especially if you did not take reasonable steps in order to secure your transactions and your computer. These steps normally include you having installed a firewall, an antivirus and antispyware software. However your bank may require from you to use additional security if you use their online banking system.

No matter how many pieces of software you have installed, the human factor is always there. If you follow a link sent to you by email asking you to login to your bank by following, this is 100% a fraudulent email. This is a phishing attempt for you to surrender your login details. If you do such a thing, chances are you do not have any case to claim your money back from your bank. If the phishing scam is set outside the UK, this will certainly make it more difficult to locate the perpetrators.

Strathclyde Forensics can study your internet history and phishing emails to determine their origin. Feel free to contact us to see how we can help you.
