Phishing & Pharming
Phishing
is
one of the most wide-spread forms of internet fraud. It works by
sending out bogus emails pretending to come from a legitimate source
(i.e. your bank) and then you are tricked in providing your login
details. More and more people became victims of phishing and the
true number will never be known as many people do not even realise
it, and others feel embarrassed to report it.
Pharming is a method of redirecting traffic from a real website
to a bogus one who again harvests your personal details or login
credentials.
Both methods base their success in the use of
social engineering, that is the manipulation of people into
believing they are doing something at their own accord, when in
reality they are falling for an elaborate trap.
Some times the trap is not elaborate, and
people fall for it because they are very trusting, desperate or
greedy. The truth is that avoiding scams like these is most of the
time easy and all you need to do is to employ some common sense.
